NRTA was founded in 1947 under the leadership of Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, as a national voluntary membership organization of retired teachers.
1958

In 1958, Doctor Andrus established the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).
1982

In 1982, NRTA and AARP officially merged, with NRTA being a separate division within AARP. At present, AARP membershilp is more than 33 million.
